Hands-on learning in the Smart Forest
A hemlock forest on the University of Southern Maine (USM) Gorham campus is about to get "smart." The forest, popular for both recreation and education, will host new remote environmental monitoring technology. The Smart Forest project provides real-time access to data online, opening up exciting opportunities for collaboration, research, and hands-on learning. Read more.
 
 
 
 
 
Students set a course for Bermuda
USM's Tourism and Hospitality majors will have the chance to experience the cruise industry first hand next year aboard the MS Veendam. Students will put their event management knowledge to work aboard Holland America's Boston to Bermuda cruise — all while earning course credit. Read more.

The power of online activism
Humanitarian aid has gone "peer-to-peer," according to Professor Francesca Vassallo, who was recently featured in a WIRED magazine story on online activism. Vassallo, director of USM's Minor in Social Media Activism, discusses the power of the internet in Syria's humanitarian crisis. Read more.

An app to walk through history
The Humanities meet the Digital Age in a new app created by a USM team. A project of USM's Digital Humanities initiative, the mobile app guides users along the Portland Women's History Walking Trail, a web-based tour that includes images and stories of the women who shaped Portland. Read more.
