Ellen DeGeneres surprises student with a big gift
University of Southern Maine (USM) graduate student and Americorps advisor Ekhlas Ahmed was stunned to be featured on Ellen after sending the star a letter describing her immigration from Sudan to Maine. She was even more surprised when Ellen DeGeneres presented her with a check for $22,000, enough to erase her student loans.

Engineers Without Borders brings change to Guatemala
USM's Engineers Without Borders (EWB) chapter recently spent a week in Villa Nueva, Guatemala. Eight EWB students and two professional engineering mentors completed a two-year project far ahead of schedule, installing five solar water heaters for the Hogar Rafael Ayau orphanage.

Portland campus upgrades get green light from trustees
USM's Board of Trustees has formally endorsed modernizations to the heart of our Portland campus, including a new dormitory, a quad and a bigger, brighter student center. "It's really about developing that sense of campus in Portland," President Glenn Cummings said.

Professor Cassidy co-curating exhibition at The Met
Art history professor Donna Cassidy will be co-curating an art exhibition by well-known artist and Maine native Marsden Hartley at New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art in March. In 2005, Cassidy authored a critically praised biography of the painter and writer, who passed away in 1943.

Commencement speaker: NPR's Brancaccio
USM is pleased to announce that award-winning journalist David Brancaccio will deliver the keynote address at the 2017 Commencement ceremony. Brancaccio, an Emmy and Peabody award winner and a Maine native, is the host of American Public Media's Marketplace Morning Report, a regular segment on NPR.

Sophomore student leader featured in Portland Press Herald
19-year-old political science major Hamdia Ahmed was featured on the front page of the Portland Press Herald. The article follows Hamdia's experiences, from her birth in Somalia during a brutal civil war, to a refugee camp in nearby Kenya, to her U.S. citizenship and dream of working for the United Nations.
