Alum's journey from The Free Press to The New York Times
The University of Southern Maine (USM) was proud to welcome The New York Times critic Neil Genzlinger '77 to campus this month. Genzlinger interviewed with President Cummings for The USM Update, held a public discussion at the Glickman Library, and met with students from The Free Press, which he edited in his junior and senior years.

Husky Day of Service nets 900 hours
292 students, faculty, staff, and alumni logged nearly 900 hours of community service for the 8th annual Husky Day of Service. Volunteers assisted at 27 local project sites, including the Animal Refuge League, Center for Grieving Children, Maine Veterans Home, and Partners for World Health.

Student artists display "powerful" work
This year's Juried Student Exhibition was a huge success! Portland Press Herald arts critic Daniel Kany hails the work, which was created by USM students across disciplines, as "powerful." Selected works are on display through May 1 at the AREA Gallery on our Portland campus.

Students performing in Molded by the Flow
Experience Southern Maine with all the senses
You won't want to miss Molded by the Flow, a unique multimedia, interdisciplinary performance collaboration. Inspired by Southern Maine's rich natural and human history, students created the show's combination of music, poetry, choreography, and design. The final performance is April 29.

Just in time for Earth Day, the latest episode of The USM Update featured Dr. Robert Sanford, director of the Department of Environmental Science and Policy, and Aaron Witham, assistant director for sustainable programs, for a discussion on how USM is staying green.

USM recently celebrated the official launch of the new Food Studies program. The new program — currently offering a Food Studies minor — began at the start of the spring semester and enrolled more than 100 students in its five inaugural courses. Five more courses will be added in the fall.
