Alumna heads to Indonesia with Fulbright

After teaching immigrant children from Somalia, Djibouti, Angola, Congo, and Kenya in Maine classrooms, Amy Quirion '16 has received a Fulbright U.S. Student Program award to continue her work in Indonesia.

Student earns Critical Language Scholarship

University of Southern Maine (USM) political science student Nairus Abdullahi earned a prestigious 2017 Critical Language Scholarship, enabling her to spend this summer learning Arabic in Jordan. Sponsored by the U.S. Department of State, the program seeks to raise the number of Americans mastering critical foreign languages.

Dedication honors Coach Ed Flaherty

USM has dedicated its baseball field to longtime coach Ed Flaherty, now in his 32nd year. The honor was featured in the Portland Press Herald, with Athletic Director Al Bean remarking that Ed "has had an enormously important impact on countless students in this institution."

$80M in campus improvements

The Portland Press Herald recently covered plans for an $80 million capital campaign to improve USM's campuses. Major initiatives include a 1,000-seat performing arts center, massive athletic facility upgrades, and an endowed "promise" scholarship program for full-time students with financial needs.

New digital tools for Osher Map Library

USM's Osher Map Library and Smith Center for Cartographic Education hopes to reach a wider audience with a new website and embedded data aimed at drawing more students, researchers, historians, and artists into its unique collection.
