Partnering in a $20M healthcare initiative

As part of a $20 million National Institutes of Health initiative, the University of Southern Maine (USM) is partnering with Maine Medical Center and the University of Vermont to help improve patient care by speeding up the time it takes to develop and implement medical treatments.

National honor for USM student ROCC founder

Congratulations to Andrew Kiezulas, a founder of USM's Recovery Oriented Campus Center (ROCC), who was honored as "Collegiate Recovery Student of the Year" at the national Association of Recovery in Higher Education conference in Washington, DC.

USM students lift up their voices for peace

USM senior Nyawal Lia and graduate student Ekhlas Ahmed were featured in a Portland Press Herald column about their young women's chorus, Pihcintu, whose members are mainly refugee immigrants living in Maine. Pihcintu has performed on NBC's Today show and, most recently, at the Kennedy Center.

Grad plans documentary on gun control

Alumna and filmmaker Vickie Morgan '16 hopes to find new insight into the gun control debate with her upcoming documentary. Vickie plans to involve people from both sides of the divisive issue, allowing them to discuss their different opinions with each other.

Proud to lead the way for diversity and inclusion

USM was the first university in Maine to have gender-neutral housing for students and a center dedicated to the LGBTQ+ community. Over the last 20+ years, USM's Center for Sexualities and Gender Diversity has educated thousands of students, faculty, and staff on how to be supportive allies through Safe Zone training.
