Medical expert credits USM for strong foundation

| Concussion expert and alumnus Michael "Micky" Collins, Ph.D. '91 recently returned to the University of Southern Maine (USM) to give a lecture on sports-related concussions. During his talk, Collins credited USM with making him a better researcher and an empathetic clinician, saying "I am just so thankful for the University and the education I had here."

Students learn sustainability through aquaponics
|
| Environmental science students have created a sustainable aquaponics lab — an ecosystem that combines raising fish with cultivating plants in water. In this symbiotic environment, the water from the baby tilapia provided nutrients for 14 pounds of harvested rainbow Swiss chard and cilantro.

Entrepreneurial minor encourages creativity
|
| USM's new Innovation, Creativity, and Entrepreneurship (ICE) minor exposes students from all majors to the science behind creativity, tools they can use to train their brains, and fundamentals of entrepreneurship. It also provides an opportunity for students to correct the misperception that creativity and art are one and the same.

History students build WWI archive
|
| Since 2014, history students at USM have been finding and documenting Maine's forgotten World War I monuments, from statues in public parks to obelisks in cemeteries. These valuable archives are now the backbone of the ever-growing Maine World War I Memorial Inventory.
