Congratulations to the Class of 2018

Our newly-minted graduates are bursting with inspiring stories. Prior to Commencement, we sat down with several members of the Class of 2018 to learn how they made the most of their time at the University of Southern Maine (USM). These students excelled both on campus and in their surrounding communities.

Special ceremony for veteran graduates

We have great pride in our student veteran population and were delighted to celebrate those who graduated this month with a medal ceremony featuring a speech by U.S. Senator Angus King. "You honored our country every day by your service, and I know that you're going to continue to do so," said King.

Opera collaboration with high schoolers

School of Music students recently debuted a one-act chamber opera, Girl in Six Beats, to rave reviews. Written by opera camp students from Portland's Telling Room with music composition by professor Daniel Sonenberg, the show offered "a powerful and timely message."

Huskies provided 1200+ volunteer hours

Nearly 300 students, faculty, and staff donated their time for the 9th annual Husky Day of Service. Participants made an impact at more than 20 community organizations, including Portland Trails, the YMCA, Garbage to Garden, and the Maine Veterans Home.

University continues rise to the top

President Glenn Cummings recently appeared on the WCSH-TV news program 207 to discuss the University's healthy turnaround in recent years, including financial stability, rising admission and retention rates, and new initiatives aimed at further workforce development.

Baseball Coach Flaherty hits 1000 wins

Currently in his 33rd season with USM, Coach Ed Flaherty became the 11th NCAA Division III baseball coach to reach his 1000th win on May 2. Under Coach Flaherty, the Huskies have never had a losing season.
