Tony Shalhoub '77
Alumnus wins first Tony Award
Tony Shalhoub won this year's Tony Award for Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role for his work in the musical The Band's Visit. Shalhoub, who earned a degree in Theatre from USM in 1977, has been nominated four times for the prestigious award.

The University of Everyone was out in force for the Pride Portland celebrations. Students, faculty, and President Glenn Cummings chanted "Educate. No hate." as they marched down Congress Street and celebrated the diversity and inclusion that is a hallmark of our community. Following the parade, a re-enactment of the 1983 musical Gay Side Story and a community discussion were held on our Portland campus.

Martín Espada
Faculty member receives prestigious award
Congratulations to Martín Espada, a faculty member in our renowned Stonecoast MFA in Creative Writing program, for winning the Ruth Lilly Poetry Prize, which recognizes the lifetime achievement of a living U.S. poet. Espada has previously won an American Book Award and has been a National Book Critics Circle nominee and a Pulitzer Prize finalist.
