Patriots owner awards professor's health clinic

Robert Kraft bestowed the $25,000 grand prize of the Myra Kraft Community MVP Awards to Leavitt's Mill Free Health Center, founded by School of Nursing Assistant Professor Patricia Thompson Leavitt. The clinic, staffed by volunteers and University of Southern Maine (USM) nursing students, helps uninsured community members identify and treat a variety of chronic conditions.

Nursing student encourages well water testing

Brent Kraushaar, a senior in the School of Nursing, has launched a campaign to make Mainers more aware of arsenic contamination in drinking water wells. Working through our Community CARE Partnership, Kraushaar produced a webcast highlighting the dangers of this odorless and tasteless carcinogen.

Alumna engineered her own future

Kelly Brewer '11 held down a full-time job while taking courses in the evening. Today, she is the director of engineering and implementation at Tilson Technologies in Portland, overseeing the engineering and construction of fiber optic networks for some of the largest telecom projects in the country.

Better together

The strong partnership forged between USM and Martin's Point Health Care focuses on preparing students for success in high-quality jobs and providing Maine employers with a high-caliber workforce. Highlights of the partnership include a new internship program, health care job shadow days, and on-campus engagement and philanthropy sponsored by Martin's Point.

Congratulations to Dean's List students

We are proud to announce that 1,180 undergraduates have been named to the recent Dean's List, a marker of academic excellence and high achievement for students with a GPA of 3.6 or higher. Those on the list represent 22 states and eight countries.
