High-tech patients help teach nurses
It's projected that by 2025, there will be significant nursing shortages all across Maine. In the School of Nursing Simulation Lab, high-tech mannequins create real-life learning experiences for students. The important skills learned in this University of Southern Maine (USM) lab ultimately produce the qualified nurses that will help meet Maine's looming workforce challenges.

Media Studies alumnus wins Emmy
Living and studying in Maine might have helped David Lovejoy '10 win his first Emmy Award. The camera operator from Oakland, ME, won "Outstanding Cinematography for a Reality Program" for his work on the TV show Life Below Zero, which is set in wilderness Alaska and airs on the National Geographic Channel. David credits our Media Studies program and being an outdoorsman for preparing him for the challenging job.

Seth Percy
Engineering the future at USM
Electrical engineering student Seth Percy '19 has chosen to pursue a career in medical robotics. He was recently awarded a fellowship to study in our Robotics and Intelligence Systems Laboratory, which actively explores the engineering careers of tomorrow. We have graduated more than 160 skilled engineers in the past five years and plan to expand to meet the demand for engineers in Maine.

Workforce development takes center stage
In the October episode of The USM Update, President Glenn Cummings speaks with faculty, staff, and alumni about our focus on workforce development ahead of a $49 million bond package vote on Election Day. If approved, "Question 4" will fund program and infrastructure improvements at USM and across the University of Maine System.

Giving veterans the boost they deserve
The Veterans Upward Bound Program helps support the educational aspirations of low-income, first-generation veterans across the state of Maine so they can gain the benefits that accompany higher education. The program was recently awarded nearly $300K from the U.S. Department of Education with the support of Senators Collins and King and Representative Pingree.

The 2018 inaugural class of Promise Scholars at USM is comprised of 19 talented, predominantly first-generation students with leadership potential, a willingness to give back to their communities, and demonstrable financial need. The education received by these students, who might otherwise not attend college, will prepare them to be successful contributors to Maine's economy.
