Accelerating to the right career
Meet Jon White, 38, who spent 16 years in an IT career, then enrolled in the School of Nursing at the University of Southern Maine (USM). After completing the accelerated program — which takes only 15 months with a prior bachelor's degree and includes clinical work in area hospitals — Jon is now making the difference he wants to make in the ICU at Maine Medical Center.

$1 million gift for digital science and innovation
Thanks to a $1 million gift from Michael Dubyak, the current Chair and former President and CEO of WEX, we will establish the Michael E. Dubyak Center for Digital Science and Innovation. The Center will support undergraduate and graduate programs in computer science and technology with goals such as preparing graduates to fill the expected 5,000 new Maine STEM jobs over the next five years.

Collaborative creativity enhances learning
A United States Department of Education grant worth nearly $2.5 million has been awarded to Side x Side, a Portland-based nonprofit that brings our student artists and educators together with public schools in Portland and now, Lewiston. The program positions art at the core of all learning and weaves it into a variety of academic subjects to enhance learning and creativity for children.

New institute expands learning northward
Plans for the Maine North Atlantic Institute at USM were unveiled this month. The Institute will forge greater business, educational, and cultural connections between Maine and countries throughout the North Atlantic, and position Maine at the center of economic activity for the east coast. It will also develop ongoing projects bringing together students, faculty, and schools that include Reykjavik University in Iceland and University of Tromsø in Norway.

Fall enrollment hits record highs
Enrollment numbers for Fall 2018 are in — and they're breaking records. Overall our student enrollment has increased by 5.18 percent and enrollment in our graduate programs has increased by 10.1 percent since Fall 2015. In addition, this year's student population includes a 5.1 percent increase in the number of students enrolling from Maine.
