Tank to table: A new course in aquaculture
We have partnered with Whole Oceans, a company constructing an Atlantic Salmon farm in Bucksport, to offer a course called "Practical Guide to Aquaculture." The course will present an overview of aquaponic growing and recirculatory aquaculture systems, giving University of Southern Maine (USM) students the opportunity to explore this fast-growing industry.

Entrepreneurial dean is focused on the future
Joanne Williams, dean of our College of Management and Human Services (CMHS), is always looking for ways to better serve students. More than 1,000 CMHS internships connect students to real-world experiences in the community. Currently, two schools within CMHS, the School of Education and Human Development and the School of Business, are working to offer more online courses and refocusing their graduate curriculum around entrepreneurial thinking, respectively.

Daniel Minter
Visual storytelling cultivates understanding
Artist-in-residence Daniel Minter's fall exhibition, "OTHERED, Displaced from Malaga," focused on the forcible eviction of mixed-race fisherman and subsistence farmers on Malaga Island, just off the coast of Maine. Minter's work was called "moving and beautiful...not to be missed" by the Portland Press Herald, and provided student and community members with a powerful lesson on the historical and cultural impact of art.

School of Music hits all the right notes
The latest episode of The USM Update will be music to your ears! President Glenn Cummings talks with Malinda Haslett, director of voice studies, Jackie Townsend, director of bands, and Nicolás Dosman, director of choral studies, to discuss their work in our School of Music and beyond. In addition, Dosman and a graduate student conduct festive selections from the USM Chamber Singers' annual holiday concert.
