Tank to table: A new course in aquaculture
We have partnered with Whole Oceans, a company constructing an Atlantic Salmon farm in Bucksport, to offer a course called "Practical Guide to Aquaculture." The course will present an overview of aquaponic growing and recirculatory aquaculture systems, giving University of Southern Maine (USM) students the opportunity to explore this fast-growing industry.

Study abroad provides real value
Start packing! A recent survey revealed 97% of study abroad students find employment after graduation with starting salaries that are 25% higher than students who have not studied abroad. Our Office of International Programs can help students locate short, faculty-led trips over school breaks, reciprocal exchange programs at universities in a wide range of countries, and even summer travel in China.

Entrepreneurial dean is focused on the future
Joanne Williams, dean of our College of Management and Human Services (CMHS), is always looking for ways to better serve students. More than 1,000 CMHS internships connect students to real-world experiences in the community. Currently, two schools within CMHS, the School of Education and Human Development and the School of Business, are working to offer more online courses and refocusing their graduate curriculum around entrepreneurial thinking, respectively.

Visual storytelling cultivates understanding
Artist-in-residence Daniel Minter's fall exhibition, "OTHERED, Displaced from Malaga," focused on the forcible eviction of mixed-race fisherman and subsistence farmers on Malaga Island, just off the coast of Maine. Minter's work was called "moving and beautiful...not to be missed" by the Portland Press Herald, and provided student and community members with a powerful lesson on the historical and cultural impact of art.
