Representing academic and athletic excellence
Our student-athletes are the pride of the University of Southern Maine (USM) Department of Athletics. This fall, 31 of our student-athletes earned a distinguished slot on the 2018 Little East Conference Fall All-Academic Team, including students from the Southern Maine Huskies men's and women's cross country and soccer teams, and women's tennis, field hockey, and volleyball teams. Twenty-three all-academic award winners have a least a 3.5 GPA and seven hold a 3.8 GPA or higher.

Investments planned for student dining
Thanks to student suggestions and feedback, Brooks Dining Hall on our Gorham campus will be undergoing a $2 million renovation. New amenities will include a health and wellness station, a gas-fired brick pizza oven, a stir-fry kiosk, a "You-Cook" area where students can prepare meals with help from a chef, and a "Simple Servings" station that caters to students with allergies and special requests.

A sample of Howard's collection
Librarian bequeaths rare gift
Albert A. Howard, a collector of rare books who worked in our libraries for 35 years, has bestowed his entire collection to the university, plus $500K for an endowment to support it in perpetuity. Comprised of 1,670 volumes, including Greek and Latin classics and Renaissance presses, the collection is considered priceless. This extraordinary gift will benefit USM, our students, and our community for countless generations.

Mezzo-soprano Megan Marino '05 has graced the stage at the Metropolitan Opera and performed at many national and international opera houses. A School of Music alumna, she was the featured cover story for Classical Singer Magazine in December 2018 where she shared many moments from her musical journey.

Alumni reach top of U.S. military command
Our focus on public service, "giving back," building relationships, and understanding all sides of an argument has produced many alumni who have gone on to serve in the top ranks of the military: a vice admiral in the Navy; the vice commandant of the U.S. Coast Guard; director of Warfare Integration for Information Dominance; Surgeon General of the U.S. Air Force; and senior advisor to the Secretary of Defense, to name a few.
