Connecting memory, history, racism
As Black History Month approaches, University of Southern Maine (USM) students are looking to the past to better understand current events. A group of students have curated an exhibition using artifacts, images, and publications from USM's special collections that are dedicated to diversity. Hands on in the chemistry lab
What's killing the fish? To find out, environmental science students from Portland High School spent a day at USM's science building, where they analyzed water samples to identify river system contaminants. The lab gave students valuable hands-on experience tackling real issues that affect our region. Read more.

Fired up about farming
Alumnus Jeffrey Lipton '08 first became interested in ceramics as a student at USM. Today, his experience growing up and working on a farm is reflected in the fanciful, salt-fired pieces he makes in his studio. Learn more about Jeffrey's work, inspiration, and love of the wood-fired kiln as he lives a potter's life in Topsham, ME.

Making music for a Maine icon

A clever twist on the Great Detective
Five media studies students are the clever minds behind a new gender-bending twist on Sherlock Holmes that was successfully funded through Kickstarter. S(her)lock is a "feminist, LGBTQIA positive take on Sherlock Holmes and the characters created by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle." Stay tuned for a November debut! Read more.
