135th Commencement Ceremony
The University of Southern Maine (USM) commencement speaker Richard Blanco had a simple message for the Class of 2015: "Never stop learning." Blanco, the nation's youngest Presidential inaugural poet, shared the stage with student speaker Matthew Araujo, who urged graduates to view their diplomas as "a passport that will unlock a door that will take us to new places." Students and Brewers Partner in the Lab
Professor Lucille Benedict has found a way to help students earn better grades in chemistry while helping a local business improve its product. Students are learning to analyze the chemical makeup of beer and are sharing their results with Allagash Brewing Company, who benefits by having a partner for lab testing. Learn more. |

Students Address Homelessness in Portland
Social work and art students took to the streets of Portland to engage people in conversations about homelessness, gentrification, and affordable housing. Partnering with the City and a local arts nonprofit, students created a Listening Wall and produced pop-up performances as part of First Friday Art Walk. Read more. |

USM Chamber Singers Tour in Eastern Europe
For nine days in May, 23 talented School of Music students traveled through Croatia and Slovenia as part of the USM Chamber Singers' sixth European tour. Conducted by Robert Russell, the choir performed a cappella selections from the Renaissance and the 20th Century in cathedrals in Dubrovnik and other cities. Read more. |

Huskies are 2015 Little East Baseball Champs
For the third time in four years, the Huskies are Little East Conference Baseball Champs, defeating Eastern Connecticut State University 4-2 in the final game. Pitcher Andrew Richards and shortstop Sam Dexter were named Most Outstanding Players and were two of four Huskies to earn All-Region Honors. Read more. |
